COULD I / MY GIRLFRIEND BE PREGNANT?

Q: Me and my boyfriend were getting to close so we started to mess around. He never put his private on my vagina. But I notice a liquid coming out of his private. Even though we didn't have sex that liquid was very close to my vagina for a while can this cause a pregnancy? But I'm
still a virgin!.

A: This is a very good question, and I'm glad you asked. There are indeed sperm present in the liquid that was coming from your boyfriend's penis. This is called pre-ejaculatory fluid. If this liquid made contact on the outside of your vaginal opening, sperm cells may have made their way inside the vagina, so it is somewhat possible that a pregnancy could occur. Sperm cells are good swimmers. That's why it is important to have the male put on a condom when he first becomes erect to guard against this fluid from entering his partner's vaginal opening.

If this has happened within the last 72 hours, you may want to consult your doctor or nearest family planning clinic for Emergency Contraceptive pills. While not 100% effective against pregnancy occurring (only abstinence is 100%), they will boost your chances of preventing a pregnancy. Taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, they are generally about 75% effective. The sooner they are taken, the more effective they are. In any event, it would be best to make an appointment with your doctor or clinic, or visit our Special Teen Clinics page for San Bernardino County clinics near you. They can give you information and counseling regarding the various birth control options available to you. Remember, abstinence is always an option, even when a
person has been sexually active in the past.

Q: My boyfriend and I had sex and he came inside me for the first time ever and it was my last day on my period ( I was just spotting a little bit.) Is there a big chance that I can get pregnant? Or is not likely because I was still kinda on my period?

A: A woman can theoretically get pregnant any time because of irregularities of the menstrual cycle. Usually the most fertile period is 5 days before her ovulation time and 5 days afterwards. This ovulation usually occurs at mid-cycle. However, since cycles vary greatly because of
a woman's health, exercise or stress level (to name a few reasons), there is really no safe time when a woman can definitely say she cannot become pregnant. Therefore, it is so important that a woman uses optimal protection against pregnancy (and STD's) each time she has sex. If she
chooses not to use abstinence (the only 100% sure method against both of these), then she must be sure to protect herself and her partner.

I encourage you to contact your doctor or clinic for an exam and counseling, including a reliable method of birth control and STD prevention. If you do not have either of these, please call 1-800-722-4777 for an appointment at our Victor Valley clinic, 16453 Bear Valley Road in Hesperia, or drop in on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. for our walk-in teen clinic, commonly referred to as YAC clinics. We will be happy to assist you!

Q: i had sex with a gurl that was 14 year old.. It was my first time and i was on a substance that is weed i did not reall know that i was haveing sex witout a condom but the question is that i did nutt all the way but what i'm afraind is that i might if pr nutted and i dont know if i did what is the prectntage of her getting pregnet she has not been on the pill or nothing like that i did get soft a couple times but is it a high risk that she will get pregnet and how long will it take her before she know with out her taking a test on anything like that. I'm jsut so worried about it and she dont seem 2 be but i just gotta know thank you very much.

A: There are many issues here, but I will address the most important ones now. Please immediately go to your girlfriend's doctor or clinic for emergency contraception. If she does not have a regular doctor, please check the governmental White Pages in the front of your telephone book. Go today! You both need counseling and education about pregnancy and STD prevention. If abstinence is not your choice, then you need to use some form of birth control every time you have sex.

Since you also mention weed, I recommend that you carefully consider the choices you are making. If you do not realize what you are doing when you smoke weed, then you should carefully consider the health, safety and legal risks you are exposing yourself to when you smoke.

You must also remember that in many states, being 17 and having sex with a 14 year is against the law and could be punishable by imprisonment and/or a fine. Please rethink this situation and get some counseling. Pregnancy is not the only issue that could cause you and your girlfriend problems that could impact the rest of your lives.

Q: How long does it take for you tell if you are pregnent or not ?

A: The clinicians at our facility tell the clients that a pregnancy test is more accurate if administered a week AFTER the first menstrual period is missed. If this has already occurred, please contact your doctor or clinic for testing and counseling.

Q: my girlfriend and i have been having sexual relations for about three months now. about two weeks ago we were having sex and the condom broke on the upper part of the side. i dont think that any sperm made its way inside her but i am afraid that it might have. what are some signs
that i can see that might show that she is pregnet?

A: The most common symptom most females have that indicates that she may be pregnant is a missed period. She may also have breast tenderness, loss of appetite and fatigue. However, these symptoms do not occur in all females at the beginning of her pregnancy or sometimes at all. If she has missed her period, she should contact her physician or clinic for a pregnancy test
and counseling. She should also inquire about emergency contraceptive pills for future concerns.

Q: my boyfriend and i had sex about a month ago unprotected but the thing is that i was on my period while we had sex. He did pull out, but i heard that you can still get pregent from pulling out. I have two questions- can i get pregent while on my peroid and what are the chances that could happen. IS it more likly to get pregnet during your period?

A: Lots of questions here! First, is it possible to get pregnant while a female is on her period? Yes, because sometimes a menstrual period is not a regular 28-day event. Many things impact on this to make it fluctuate: age, stress, health conditions, amount of physical exercise, medications, and more! Usually when a female is menstruating, she is not fertile, but as you can see above, she may have ovulated early or late (when she is most fertile) and may be within the time limits of fertility. Secondly, using the "pull-out" method of birth control may be considered better than nothing, but it still leaves open many chances of getting pregnant, not to mention risks of STDs. Remember, pre-ejaculatory fluid has thousands of sperm cells in it (and it only takes one to fertilize an egg). While condoms are not 100% (only abstinence can provide 100% prevention), they can cut down on the risk for both pregnancy and some STDs considerably. Third and lastly, please make an appointment with your doctor or nearest family planning clinic. If you do not have either one, please check the governmental White Pages of your phone book for the family planning services closest to you. Write down all your concerns and address them to your doctor or nurse. These people are not only medically trained, but equipped to counsel you and your boyfriend about all the issues you are facing. If they run across a problem they can't handle by themselves, they will surely refer you to someone who can.

Q: ME and my boyfriend have sex but he ONLY goes inside me with his boxers on covering him and never comes from it. my period came a month late and im scared to death wondering if his pre-ejaculatory fluid went through his boxers and into me. Is it possible to get pregnet from that
because my period came a month late. My periods are usually pretty regular although once maybe 3 months ago shortly before me and him started doing this my period came 20 days later then expected.

A: It isn't necessary for ejaculation to occur for a man to impregnate a woman. On the tip of his penis are thousands of sperm cells in the pre-ejaculatory fluid. It that fluid entered your vagina, the sperm cells could swim upward towards your fallopian tubes where the eggs travel down from the ovaries.

Boxer shorts are NOT an effective birth control method. They offer nothing close to what condoms offer for protection against pregnancy or STDs. I imagine they are extreme uncomfortable for both partners. Even though you have had your menstrual period (which was off schedule), it is possible that a pregnancy has occurred.

Please make an appointment for a complete reproductive health physical exam. They will give you a pregnancy test. They will also give you several options when they counsel you, should the test be positive. If you are not pregnant, please ask the clinicians for a reliable birth control method. None are 100% effective for preventing pregnancy and STDs like abstinence, but there are other methods that might be right for you. If you do not have a doctor, please consult your governmental White Pages in the phone book for the nearest Family Planning clinic.

Q: Hi, my question is if my girlfriend and i just make out and rub each other fully clothe and i cum in my underwear and will she get pregnant?

A: I guess the answer to your question would depend if your garments are thin, thick, absorbent, or how well they cover you both. I would suggest that if you continue this behavior, you might want to wear a condom for further protection. It would also be good for you and your partner to make an appointment with your physician or local family planning clinic. Check your phone book under the governmental White Pages for assistance. Your clinician will help you address pregnancy and STD prevention, as well as other issues that may be concerning you.

Q: I had sex with my boyfriend, he used a condom, but he thinks it busted. I have had late periods, they are shorter (1 or 2 days), light, and I heard that sometimes you could be pregnet and have a period, but it is not normal. I haven't told anyone. My breast are getting tender and I have stomach pain, and it's been about 3 and a half months. I would like to know is there a chance of me being pregnet?

A: The best thing to do to allay your fears is to make an appointment with your doctor or call the nearest family clinic (check the phone book's governmental White Pages under "Family Planning"). Tell them what you have told me. They will give you a complete examination and also test you for pregnancy. If you are not pregnant, they can help you select a reliable
birth control method, if abstinence is not your choice. They will also give you advice about preventing STDs, which may involve your boyfriend's use of a condom, too, even though you choose another method. If you are pregnant (and this is indeed possible), they will counsel you on options that will help you make decisions for your health and that of the baby.

Symptoms that you mentioned may occur if you are stressed about a possible pregnancy, so please get checked out immediately.

A: Whenever a man ejaculates or has pre-ejaculatory fluid come in close contact with a woman's vagina, it may be a problem, not only for a pregnancy risk but for STD infection as well. If complete abstinence is not an option for you both, then I would suggest he wear a condom to better protect each of you.

Schedule an appointment with your doctor or nearest family planning clinic (check the governmental White Pages in your phone book) and go together for a check-up and counseling. You'll undoubtedly feel more comfortable with their suggestions.

Q: If my girlfriend is on her period and we have anal sex ... how likely or cant she get pregnet?

A: A woman can ovulate at any time, even though she is menstruating if she is not having a regular cycle. When she ovulates (releases an egg from her ovaries), she may then become impregnated. If any of the semen comes in contact with her vagina, it can swim towards her fallopian tubes where the released egg is making its journey down towards her uterus. That could mean that the sperm cells could fertilize an egg even after five days following
sex.

Many factors, such as stress, medications, and physical exercise/health can contribute to this fluctuation in a female's cycle. Therefore, it always important to provide both of you with the best protection possible, not only from pregnancy but from STDs, including AIDS, by at least using a condom.

Q: Can a girl have symptoms of being pregnet the day after haveing sex.... if so what would they be?

A: If your girlfriend has pregnancy symptoms that quickly, she should be examined by a physician or clinic. It may be that these symptoms are from a previous sexual encounter. In any case, please encourage her to make an appointment soon, especially if she has missed a period by this time. Symptoms of pregnancy vary, so a pregnancy test is the best way to find out if she is pregnant or not.

Q: I have a question Im scared to death I might be pregnant. I was a Virgin. until 2 months ago when me and my bf at the spur of the moment had sex i guess he had his boxers on covering his penis and pulled out way before he thought he was going to come just to be safe. After that my period skipped a month which scared the hell out of me then i got it for 5 days very heavy with cramps. I have also been not feling so great lately. Im very scared that His pre cum went through his boxers and got me pegnant. Am i just being overly cautious and overreacting or is there a chance im pregnant?

A: Yes, unfortunately it is possible that you could be pregnant. Pre-ejaculatory fluid has thousands of sperm cells which could cause a pregnancy if the fluid came in contact with a woman's vagina. Sperm are really good at swimming upwards towards the Fallopian tubes, once they enter the vagina, striving to reach the released egg. Some can even survive up to five days! So, please go to your doctor or nearest family planning clinic (check the governmental White Pages of your phone book) and have a complete checkup. If you are not pregnant, they will counsel you on a reliable birth control method if abstinence is not an option. They will also give you information about preventing STDs.

Q:   I started the birth control pill Ortho-Tricyclen ans continued for exactlly one pack(one month) then because of constant breakthrough bleeding, my doctor changed my prescription to Ortho-Cyclen and I just took the last pill of the 21 day pack today, so I have to start the next pack of cyclen next sunday. I had sex yesterday, unprotected and my boyrfriend came inside of me. Could I be pregnant? I take the pill at the same time everyday and I have never ever missed one day. What are my chances of being pregnant?

A: I consulted a nurse on staff and she feels that you should probably be protected against getting pregnant this time if you followed the course events you outlined. However, to be on the safe side, and because the only 100% effective method of birth control is abstinence, you should consult your doctor. Also, make sure to let your doctor know if you have any side effects with the current method.

Q:   i was with my boyfriend well he was tugging then when he had cum he went on to me could i be pregnent? please help thanks so much

A: If I understand you correctly, you are saying that your boyfriend had not entered your vagina with his penis but ejaculated outside on you, and you are wondering if this could cause pregnancy. If this is correct, it would depend upon several factors. First, did he entered your vagina at all? If so, the pre-ejaculatory fluid usually contains 500,000-one million sperm and
can cause pregnancy. If not, he could still impregnate you by ejaculating close to your vagina, if the sperm could then enter your vagina and start "swimming" towards your uterus.

The important thing for you to do is to immediately make an appointment with your physician or nearest family planning clinic for an exam and pregnancy test. The clinic can be found in the governmental white pages under County Public Health Family Planning. After obtaining the results of your pregnancy test, you can then request counseling about the various birth control and STD prevention methods, including the only 100% method for both, which is abstinence. This will help you decide what you need to do in the future to protect yourself and your boyfriend and alleviate your concerns about pregnancy and STDs.

Q:  I have been taking Levlen (birth control) and I just started about 8 days ago, prior to that I was on birth control about 2 years ago. Both were not being used to prevent contraception, but to make my periods regular. While being sexually active with my fiance we have been using the "pull-out" method for quite a while. This time he pulled out way too late. Has the birth control been taken into effect, or do I have to worry about being pregnent? It's only been 8 days since I have started this pill. HELP!

A: If you have been using your new birth control method, Levlen, as directed continuously for only eight days and prior to that were using withdrawal, you may have gotten pregnant before the Levlen has taken effect. I would strongly suggest that you make an appointment for a reproductive health exam if you have not already done so. At the very least you can ask for a pregnancy test to alleviate your anxiety. I have a feeling that you have had this appointment recently in order to begin this new method. In that case, call and ask your physician your questions directly. That should be part of the service. Your physician will also be able to instruct you on the effectiveness of your method and the reliability of withdrawal (with and without using other methods).

Q:  i had sex but used a condom, moreover i even pulled it out beore ejaculation. After 2 weeks she got sick. It has been a month and she missed her period and showed symptoms of pregnancy. is she pregnant? thanx!

A: It is indeed possible that your partner is pregnant, even though you used a condom and pulled out before ejaculation. Remember, abstinence is the only 100% sure method of both birth control and STD prevention. Semen has sperm cells that are present in pre-ejaculatory fluid. It is possible that some of this semen came into contact with your partner's vagina. Also there could have been a tear or leak in the condom or when you pulled out, the semen leaked into her vagina at that time. Please have your partner get a reproductive health exam that includes a pregnancy test with her doctor or nearest public health family planning clinic as soon as possible. It would
be great if you could accompany her if you both feel comfortable with that. You can find your closest public health offices in the governmental White Pages of your phone book. You can also ask all your questions at that time.

Q:  what are some of the signs i may be pregnent?

A:  Signs and symptoms of pregnancy vary from female to female. One indicator can be, of course, the cessation of the menstrual period. Also some women have morning sickness, begin to gain a little weight and/or have breast tenderness. Others may have none of these symptoms but feel a difference in their body rhythm. The important thing is to relieve your mind by getting a reproductive health exam and pregnancy test by making an appointment with your family physician, your OB-GYN doctor or the local Family Planning clinic. This latter choice can be found by checking your Governmental White Pages, usually located in the front of your phone book before local residents' names appear. If you are pregnant, the clinician will counsel you on your options and refer you to prenatal care. If you are not pregnant, be sure to seek advice how to protect yourself from not only unplanned pregnancy but sexually-transmitted diseases by reviewing the birth control methods available to you. Remember, abstinence is the only 100%
guarantee against both pregnancy and STD's.

Q:  My girlfriend and I have engaged in sexual activities for about 5 Months now. She has been on birth control for about 4. The first time she took the pill, her period was a little late and she didn't get it until about three days later but ever since has been two to three days. We have before done the "pull-out" method and she usually takes her pill around the same time everyday. We have done the pull out while on the pill but we did it like one day after her period had ended.
Will she get pregnant off of the pre-cum that may come out during the intercourse being on the pill?

A:  Since the birth control pill is not 100% effective (only method that is 100% is abstinence), it is theoretically possible that your girlfriend could get pregnant from the sperm contained in the pre-ejaculatory fluid present before pull out. However, to be more sure that she has an even smaller chance of getting pregnant, I would suggest that you use a latex or polyurethane condom at the beginning of your foreplay activities. For more information and options, please consult your physician or the local public health department family planning clinic in your area. Public Health clinics are listed in your government white pages of your phone directory.

A:  There is a possibility of your girlfriend getting pregnant if she misses even one of her birth control pills. Hopefully she consulted her clinician or physician and he or she advised her to double up on her pill to decrease her chances of a pregnancy. You both may want to discuss an
alternate birth control method that does not require as many reminders, such as Depo Provera injections or the new hormonal patch. However, whatever you both decide, please follow the instructions carefully and faithfully to assure you won't have this concern again.

Q:  my boyfriend and i were fooling around with our pants off and he was comming really close to my vagina and putting it in about 1/3 the way in.. we are afraid that he might pre gone inside of me but we arent for sure. we dont know if it was just me being wet or if he might of dripped anything.. we dont have intentions of having sex but got caught up in the moment... it was close to 5 days after the last day of my period. we are both scared to death and are upset that we got caught up in the moment. now we just are wondering what are the chances of him going to soon and if there is different types of cum... he did 5 min later cum but away from me. also what is the time that conception is the most common .. thank you soo much..

A:   Conception can occur most anytime during a woman's cycle, as long as the released egg has left the ovary and is on its way through the Fallopian tubes to the uterus. Once an egg has reached the uterus and has not been fertilized by a sperm, it will be flushed from the body with the onset of the next menstrual period. Fertilization is most likely to take place up to five days before and five days after the release of the egg. Sperm can live within a woman's body up to five days. Optimal time of fertilization is right around the time of ovulation (release of the egg). Since it is hard to perfectly judge exactly when ovulation occurs, it is best to be protected at all times. The only 100% method is, of course, abstinence.

There can be some sperm present in a male's pre-ejaculatory fluid. If it comes into contact with a woman's vagina, some of the sperm can start their journey to reach the egg. Please contact your physician or public health department family planning program immediately to learn if Emergency Contraception (ECP) is still an option for you. It can be effective up to five days after unprotected sex. If you do not have a physician, please check your Government White Pages in your phone book for the clinic nearest you.

Q:  If you're wearing shorts and you sit on a chair with semen, can the sperm somehow get you pregnant?

A:   There is a very small likelihood of pregnancy, but I would encourage the young lady to visit a physician or clinic as soon as possible for further guidance so all aspects of pregnancy, birth control and STDs could be better explained. If this scenario happens to a young teen, her body may not be regulated to a regular routine yet. She may also be involved in rigorous sports, which could throw off her cycle. The best solution is for her to have an exam and some reproductive health counseling. She can then discuss how this situation occurred and how to avoid similar
problems in the future.

A:  Generally, sperm does not live outside the body more than 5 minutes without a moist environment. If the conditions are as you suggest, I doubt that you could get pregnant in just that way. However, if any sperm were to have come in contact with your vagina in any other manner (i.e. foreplay with pre-ejaculatory fluid present) pregnancy might be possible from that encounter. I would also encourage you and your partner to visit the closest health department clinic for more information and a check-up exam.

A:  There is always a chance you may transfer your semen to your girlfriend's vagina when you are just in your underwear, especially if you are practicing digital sex. Semen are great "swimmers!" If complete abstinence is not your choice of action, then you should consider using a condom for greater protection. This will also help protect each other from STDs, as well as pregnancy.
